How the West (over 60’s) slayed the Welsh Dragons + England LX + Scottish LX

Day 1 of the Dragons tournament at Swansea saw the West team in imperious form on a very warm day.

First up were Dragons over 70’s who were despatched 3:0 in a very comfortable manner with goals from Roger Britton and Nigel Sherwood (2).

Next up was the “big one” v LX over 60 and in an excellent game West were triumphant 2:1 thanks to two goals from Martyn Richards.

The last game on the first day was a fairly sedate affair against Dragons over 60’s and a much changed West side secured a comfortable 2:0 win with goals from Rod Naughalty and Martyn Richards.

Day 2 dawned with a rather weary West side shorn of the mercurial talents of Richards and Naughalty taking the field against a strong LX over 65 side. This was a tight affair which saw West go ahead with a goal just before half-time from occasional centre forward Frank Rodgers. In the second half LX “huffed and puffed” but couldn’t break down a well-organised West defence. Final score – West 1 : LX o 65’s 0.

The last game of the day was against Scottish Thistles and a comfortable 3:1 win was secured with goals from Malcolm Green and Martin Palmer (2).

The West squad that travelled home unbeaten were:

Nick Grimshaw, Paul Atkins, Bob Brewer, Roger Finnimore, Malcolm Green, Ian Harvey, Nick Kendall, Roger Britton, Paul Masterton, Royce Menezes, Des Osborne, Martin Palmer, Ian Redfearn, Martyn Richards, Frank Rodgers, Nigel Sherwood, Dave Webb, Rod Naughalty.
